In 1913, a new game came to the Toronto Exhibition. “Auto Polo” was a thrill for the competitors and fans alike.
The rules were essentially the same as those for water polo except you played in or on automobiles. Each automobile had a driver and a passenger. Obviously the driver was in the car manoeuvering the car into the right position. The passenger, however, was standing on the running board, holding onto the car with one hand, while swinging the mallat with the other, trying to knock the ball through the goal posts. (Do you think maybe, our safety officials of today might have a problem with this???)
Auto Polo was a big hit at the CNE back in 1914-1920.
