Larry Atkinson
Larry Atkinson – 1951 – 2023
Wife – Judy Atkinson
Children – Nicole and Amy
In 1968, when Ridgetown Raceway reopened, Rick Gryp bought a 1932 Ford stock car from Glen Hall, and Larry—just 16 at the time—was his driver of choice. In his rookie season, Larry won multiple races, and it was no surprise when his success continued for the next 40 years.
Larry, the firstborn son of Joe and Eleanor Atkinson, grew up with racing in his blood; he spent his youth watching his father race (and win) at tracks all over southwestern Ontario during the 1950s and 1960s, and you could always find him cheering Dad on from the grandstands.
During this time, he competed at the Ridge and Raleigh Raceways (South Buxton) in the modified and late model divisions and was known for his quiet confidence on the track. Being drawn to open- wheel cars, he was excited to have the chance to drive a 360 sprint car in the Southern Ontario Sprints series.
In 1996, he finished third in the points, and he never let his siblings forget it. Larry leaves behind his beloved wife Judy, daughters Nicole and Amy, his brother Tim, and his sister Amber. Predeceased by his parents and his brother Ron. Larry will be dearly missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
