Gary Witter
Gary’s Wife – Deanna
Gary’s Boys – Mike, Mark and David
Gary first raced a Jalopy numbered 1-11 back in 1957. In 1958 Gary moved up a class into the “B” Modified division racing the number 10.
It was 1959 that Gary first climbed into the Jimmy Howard owned #19. Jimmy Howard was a mentor to Gary. While still very young, Gary learned a lot from Jimmy. The two became great friends.
Over the course of his racing career, Gary earned the friendship and respect from his peers at the track. During his career Gary raced at CNE, Pinecrest, Bridgeport, Delaware, Nilestown, Flamboro, Oswego, Tri City Speedway and many more tracks throughout Canada and the northern states.
The 1967 Oswego Speedway Rookie of the Year Award went to Gary Witter in Jimmy Howard’s #19.
It was the year 1961 that Gary won the CNE Stadium Championship in the Howard owned #19. While Gary and Jimmy remained great friends, Gary stopped racing Jimmy’s cars in 1968 because Jimmy had closed the race shop for good.
During the 1969 racing season Gary started selling Hoosier Racing tires and rims.
After a meeting with Al Webster and Jack Rowe, Gary made the decision to drive their car for the 1970 racing season.
In 1971, Al Webster bought a car from Harvey Docsteader, the number 46. It was agreed that Gary would race the car whenever possible but his tire business was picking up and Gary had to look after the business as well.
Unfortunately, Gary Witter was killed in a racing accident at the Oswego Speedway on September 5, 1971 on the 10th lap of the Annual Oswego Speedway Classic!
